Church of the Unbroken Word
A state church holding that the one true god speaks only through scripture correctly interpreted.
Object of Worship
Vessarath, the Unbroken Word, is the single sovereign god who authored existence through language itself. He is exacting and unchanging, judging mortals by their fidelity to his recorded utterance.
Founding Myth
Before the first light, there was only silence, and Vessarath broke it by speaking the world into being one clause at a time: sky, salt, root, bone. It is recorded that he spoke for nine hundred days without pause, and that on the final day he uttered the Closing Word and fell silent forever, sealing all further truth within what had already been said. The prophet Ashael Tor received the transcription of that utterance directly from a burning column of script that hovered above the dry lake of Kessimir, and the ink of that first scripture is said to still smell faintly of char. Because Vessarath speaks no more, the Church holds that every letter of the transcribed Word is a literal fragment of the god himself, and to alter one stroke of it is to mutilate his living body.

The sacred sign is the Sealed Sigil, a single vertical line crossed by seven horizontal bars, said to render the shape of the Closing Word's final syllable. It is rendered only in black ink on white cloth or gold leaf on black stone, for Vessarath permits no other coloring of his letters.
Inside the Temple
The great cathedrals of the Word rise in tiers of pale stone, their naves lined floor to vaulted ceiling with copied scripture, so that a worshipper stands inside a literal wall of god. Light falls through narrow clerestory windows onto lecterns bearing the Unbroken Text, chained in silver so no page may ever be removed, and the only sound permitted is the recitation of approved commentary. Incense is forbidden as an unscriptural addition; the air smells instead of vellum, tallow, and cold stone.
Rules of the Faithful
- The faithful must memorize the Approved Canon precisely as rendered by the sanctioned scholars, for a misremembered phrase is accounted a sin against the god's own body.
- Private interpretation is strictly forbidden; every believer must submit their understanding of scripture to a licensed Reader before speaking it aloud in public.
- Daily attendance at the reading-hours is compulsory for citizens of rank, and children are catechized by rote until the Canon is inseparable from memory itself.
Ties to Power
The Church is fused to the throne by doctrine itself: the monarch's right to rule is confirmed only by the High Reader's declaration that the sovereign's bloodline is named favorably within the sanctioned scripture, and coronations are void without it. Tithes are collected as state tax, heresy is prosecuted under royal law by the Crown's own magistrates, and the Church's scholars sit as sworn advisors within the royal court, their theological rulings carrying the force of statute.
The Present Moment
A fragment of older scripture has surfaced in a border province, predating the Approved Canon by centuries and containing a clause about royal succession that contradicts the version the crown was blessed under. The High Reader has quietly ordered the fragment destroyed rather than authenticated, fearing it is genuine, while a young Reader who copied it before its seizure now hides the transcription and wrestles with whether preserving Vessarath's truest word is itself the deepest heresy of all.
